Building a VMware Image

SharePoint Resources is pleased to offer the SharePoint Resources Virtualization Class.

We use VMware Workstation to teach you how to build virtual images for development in Microsoft SharePoint (MOSS).

You will get a follow along set of SOPs (standard operating procedures) that will allow you to download a trial version of VMware and build your own using a step-by-step screen image workbook form.

First you will be shown what a Virtual Machine is and why you would want one. SharePoint being our primary product probably leads you to the conclusion that it has something to do with that -- right. Great guess! We use a VMware image on a laptop to do all our inclass demonstrations. We build an image, copy it to the laptop, use it and abuse it for the class and then simply discard it and start over for the next class.

You can do this for your projects at work, you can use it for training yourself at home in SharePoint by building a Server 2003 R2 with all the necessary software to allow you to try everything you find is a book. Screw it up? Delete the damaged image, copy another image on your machine and start over.

Students should bring their laptop to follow along or you may simply follow the lecture. To be usable, the laptop profile should be a robust CPU with a minimum of 1.5 GHz speed, contain at least 2 gigabytes of memory, at least 32 gigabytes of free drive space, run the latest service pack of OS, XP or Vista. The instructor will not configure your PC but will make every effort, short of impacting the class, to get VMware installed and running. The lecture is sufficient however and being a very detailed in the online take-away SOP file is provided, it can be executed at your place of work.

The SharePoint Resources VMware Class will present:

  • VMware orientation:
    • What is VM?
    • Where can I get it and should I buy it.
    • How can I use it to learn SharePoint.
    • Can I use it to learn Development; VB and C#, Web Parts
